OTTAWA, ON – MAY 19: Evgeni Malkin /

Dion Phaneuf

Dion Phaneuf, LD- Age, 32. Height, 6-4. Weight, 227 lbs. Shoots- Left

Contract- $7 million a season through 20/21.

Caveat- Phaneuf has a 12 team trade list; the Islanders may not have made the cut, but for argument’s sake…

Phaneuf is a familiar if often heckled face. Fans thought he was gonna be a premiere defenseman; he only turned out pretty good and now folks won’t let him fuhgeddaboudit.

He’s still a very good d-man with leadership qualities and plenty of experience. He plays physical, contributes on offense and rarely misses games. Phaneuf would strengthen the Islanders defensive left side nicely considering the hole de Haan left after his injury.

At 7 million a year though, NY would have to work out a deal to cut his cap hit.

Starting Point For Negotiations

Michael Dal Colle- An Ontario local, highly drafted and touted, highly coachable, still worth something at the trading block.

Calvin de Haan- Solid top 4 de-man. Could re-sign in Ottawa since he too is a local. Might even give a discount since he’s suffered injuries and probably wants a contract with term.

Draft Picks- A 2018 2nd rounder and a 2019 5th rounder. If de Haan doesn’t re-sign the 5th rounder becomes a 2019 2nd rounder.

Salary Retention- The Senators retain two million of Phaneuf’s salary, leaving the Islanders a much more manageable five million.

Proposed Defensive Pairings

Leddy-Mayfield
Phaneuf-Pulock
