Alexei Yashin

I know what you’re thinking, didn’t we just put him on our list of bad Islanders contracts? Yes, but just because he had a bad contract doesn’t mean he was a bad New York Islander.

Yashin spent five seasons with the New York Islanders was extremely productive in each of those years. He had 290 points (119 goals, 171 assists) in 346 games.

His best year was in 2001-2002, his first year when he had 75 points (32 goals, 43 assists). He was an integral part of that year’s team that took on the Toronto Maple Leafs in a grueling seven-game series.

The problem with him was there was no way for him to live up to his contract. In September of 2001, Yashin was signed to a 10-year $64 million contract.

On Junes 6, 2007 the Islanders elected to buyout Alexei Yashin. He would never play another game in the NHL again. Yashin would go on to play in the KHL for a while, but his NHL career was over with.

He played 12 years in the league. In 850 career games, he had 781 points to his name. Yashin was an extreme talent, who gets a bad reputation due to Mike Milbury making a poor financial decision.
