Devon Toews

2017-18 AAV: $925,000

In the New York Islanders pipeline of prospects is defender Devon Toews. He took the fanbase by storm last year after having an impressive season with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

In 76 games, Toews put up 45 points. Ranking him as the second for a defenseman for the Sound Tigers and third on the team in scoring.

Going into the 2017-18 training camp, all eyes were on Devon Toews. He played so well that he almost played Ryan Pulock out of a spot. That’s right. For a bit, we thought that Toews would make the jump to the NHL before Ryan Pulock would. The same Ryan Pulock that’s having a good season at the NHL right now with 27 points in X games.

With a bad injury, he picked up in December Toews’ follow-up season was cut short. He was still able to put up 22 points in 30 games before having to sit out the season. It’s safe to say that he’s outgrown the AHL. But is he ready for the NHL?

He’s never played in the NHL so what is he worth at the NHL level? Who knows? The Islanders certainly have no idea. They’ll want to know. I expect them to hand Toews a short-term show me deal. Two to three years in length at an equally small cap hit. I’m thinking two years at $1.5 million AAV.

Contract: 2 Years, $1.5 million AAV
