GLENDALE, AZ – JANUARY 22: Nick Leddy

Defense 1 – Nick Leddy

That’s right, the New York Islanders current number one defenseman could have been the product of the Islanders years ago. Had they kept their pick.

Before the 2009 draft, Garth Snow decided to clean house a bit. That draft was supposed to be a big one with talent throughout the first round, so why not try to pick up an extra selection.

By shipping Mike Comrie and Chris Campoli to the Ottawa Senators just before the trade deadline, he did just that. In return, he got Dean McAmmond and Ottawa’s first-round pick in 2009, 26th overall.

At the draft, Garth decided he wanted to move up from 26 and gave Columbus, Ottawa 1st, a second, third and fourth-round pick for the Blue Jackets 16th overall pick and their third-round pick.

That 16th overall pick would eventually become Nick Leddy. But not before Garth decided to move up the draft again, this time by four spots to number 12 to select Calvin de Haan. He sent the pick that would be Nick Leddy to Minnesota along with a third and seventh round pick.

The Islanders would obviously get Nick Leddy back and give up next to nothing in order to do so. But in the grand scheme of things, he could have been had for free back in 2009.
