NEW YORK, NY – FEBRUARY 11: Mathew Barzal

Getting Barzal

So with the lack of a first-round pick in 2015, Garth Snow had to get creative. So he called his buddy Peter Chiarelli over in Edmonton. Chiarelli was new to the Edmonton job and so Garth decided to give him a layup.

How about defenseman and the former fourth overall pick in 2012 Griffin Reinhart for the Oilers 16th overall pick and their second-round pick int he 2015 draft? That’s fair right?

(Thanks for that Edmonton. Oh and Anthnoy Beauvillier too…And Jordan Eberle.)

For the Islanders, the trade allowed them to essentially move up five spots in the draft. Their original pick, by then, in the hands of the Ottawa Senators thanks to the Robin Lehner trade was the 21st overall in the draft. Ottawa picked Colin White with it.

Would you keep Michael Dal Colle if it meant you could also keep Mathew Barzal? The answer is obviously yes.

With Edmonton’s pick, the Islanders drafted Barzal 16th overall. Two years after his draft he’s the 18th highest scoring player in the league this season and the highest scoring rookie by 17 points.

The New York Islanders worked their way into Mathew Barzal because they wanted to land a winger for Tavares. A winger they had all along by the way in Josh Bailey. They no longer have Vanek, but they’ve got some serious depth down the middle with Barzal and Tavares now.
