Mike Green | Detroit Red Wings

Production: 33 points (8G, 25A), Last Contract: $6 million AAV

Mike Green is productive both 5on5 and on the power play, he shoots right, and more importantly, he’s going to be available on July 1st in free agency. Green would be a good pickup. Under one condition.

That the Islanders lose Calvin de Haan in free agency.

What I mean by that is; if the New York Islanders were to lose Calvin de Haan in free agency, then I think going after Mike Green would be a good idea.

I say that for two reasons. First, the cost. Mike Green is already making $6 million on the cap. His actual salary was also $6 million last season. At 32-years-old, it’s hard to see Green accepting less than six in free agency. Calvin de Haan could likely be had for less.

The $5 million his side started arbitration negotiations with last offseason would represent a million in savings over Green for what could be, and this is point number two, a better player in de Haan.

If the Islanders lose Calvin de Haan to free agency and Mike Green could be had for between $5 and $6 million then the Islanders should make the deal.

Next: Who Do You Cut From The Isles Roster?

Ideally, I want to keep Calvin de Haan over Mike Green, but I have a feeling that de Haan might get better offers than the one he might get from the New York Islanders.

That’s how bare the 2018 free agency window is for the Islanders. The third player on the list is heavily conditioned in the hopes that they keep a player they already have.
