HERNING, DENMARK – MAY 08: Teuvo Teravainen of Finland skates against Norway during the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship group stage game between Finland and Norway at Jyske Bank Boxen on May 8, 2018 in Herning, Denmark. (Photo by Martin Rose/Getty Images) /

Teuvo Teravainen

If John Tavares leaves the Islanders are going to have a major hole at center. Sure, Barzal can slot up to the top-line I’m sure but their depth after that is lacking. So if Tavares does leave, or is leaving, the Islanders should look no further than Teuvo Teravainen.

He’s a natural center but he can play all three forward positions, and has, at the NHL level. 2017-2018 was Teravainen’s best year in the league so far, as the 23-year-old exploded for 64 points on the season.

Teuvo’s versatility is what makes him so appealing. He could either slot in as the second line center or can play the wing if you need him to.

Teravainen has one more year at $2.86 million before he becomes a restricted free agent. Even though he’ll likely be due a raise at the end of the year, he’s still considered a controllable player, especially at his young age.

This really only makes sense for the Islanders if they lose out on J.T. in free agency.

Any of these five players listed would be a welcomed addition to the New York Islanders, each serving different purposes. There are many routes the Islanders can go here, but one thing is for certain, get Don Waddell on the telephone as soon as possible.
