John Tavares will explore his options in pre-free agency. Of the five teams he’ll be speaking with, who should the New York Islanders be worried about?

John Tavares will do his due diligence and review his options in free agency. He’s told the New York Islanders that he will speak with five teams in the period before July 1st, 2018.

The Islanders captain and former first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft is well aware of the situation on the Island. The only team he’s ever known has completely rebuilt its front office in an attempt to keep him from leaving.

He knows that the Islanders have one of the better top-six in the NHL. He knows that the prospect pipeline got a significant boost at the 2018 draft. But he also knows that the Islanders defense was the worst last season and that they don’t have a starting goalie going into 2018-19.

He also knows what the New York Islanders are willing to offer him. According to one source, the offer was $88 million, while Arthur Staple believes the offer was $80 million over eight years ($10 million AAV) with the possibility to rise as high as $96 million over eight years ($12 million AAV).

Tavares has done the good vs bad, pros vs. cons, analysis with the New York Islanders. He’s had nine years to do it. Now he gets the chance to complete that analysis for five other teams and decide which one he prefers.

What should we be worried about or not worried about for each of the five teams Tavares will reportedly be speaking with?
