New York Islanders Podcast: John Tavares It’s Not You It’s Me

John Tavares finally penned his breakup letter to the New York Islanders in the Players Tribune. All it does is reaffirm everything we thought about him the moment he decided to leave.
From day one John Tavares wanted to join the Toronto Maple Leafs. So when his deal was up with the New York Islanders he returned back home to his childhood club. His Players Tribune letter was 4,000+ words of him trying to rationalize his decision to us.
He tried to explain the dissonance in his heart between the love for his hometown team – the Maple Leafs – and his love for a club that “raised him”, the Islanders. His words.
The letter explains how he felt and what he went through, but more than anything it shows just how deep his love for the Toronto Maple Leafs was. Which is essentially any of the Islanders faithful’s problem with his decision.
It’s that the decision was made years ago. He just didn’t tell anyone.
Other Topics Covered
Tavares has been gone for almost two weeks and he’s still stealing Islanders headlines along with their hearts. Good thing there are other things to talk about:
The Islanders acquired KHL free-agent Jan Kovar to play center. Where will he slot in the roster and what can we expect from the Islanders latest acquisition?
Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello went on Sirius XM NHL Radio to calm down the fan base. After losing John Tavares and then acquiring Leo Komarov and Valtteri Filppula it’s safe to say the fan base was alarmed.
Brock Nelson is heading towards arbitration. What can the Islanders expect as a high-ball offer from “Camp Nelson”? Could it be somewhere around the $5 million range?
The 2018-19 New York Islanders are going old-school physical hockey. It won’t be pretty to look at, but it’s going to be one heck of an entertaining show to watch.
