Luca Sbisa

Former Team: Vegas Golden Knights
Age: 28-years-old | $3.6 million contract

The Vegas Golden Knights feel that Sbisa is surplus to requirements as they enter their second season in the NHL. So after going all the way to the NHL Stanley Cup finals last season with an expansion franchise, Luca Sbisa is awaiting an NHL contract. Tough break.

A veteran of ten NHL seasons, Sbisa was absent for most of the 2017-18 season for the Golden Knights, but he featured in all 82 games for the Canucks the previous year.

Even though Sbisa only played 30 games for the Golden Knights in 2017-18 he still managed 14 points. That’s a pace of 38 points over the course of a full NHL season. That would have been a career year for the 28-year-old Italian.

That’s right, he’s only 28. Generally, when we think of tryout options we think of players that are on the wrong side of 30 and are just looking for that one last deal before they’re forced to hang up their skates.

For Sbisa that wouldn’t be the case. He’s still young enough to stick around if he impresses after the 2018-19 season. If he keeps up the form he had with the Golden Knights in 2017-18, that might be a real possibility.

Again, I can’t stress this enough, the seventh defenseman position going into 2018-19 should be Devon Toews’. But with new management, there’s no guarantee that he gets it this season. If he doesn’t these three defenders are good options.
