DALLAS, TX – JUNE 22: Oliver Wahlstrom poses after being selected eleventh overall by the New York Islanders during the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft at American Airlines Center on June 22, 2018 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images)

Oliver Wahlstrom

With Oliver Wahlstrom, the New York Islanders have the next version of Alex Ovechkin and Patrik Laine. They have a pure goalscorer at the very start of his NHL career.

Ok. That might be overinflating Wahlstrom’s wroth by a tad. If he truly was the next Alex Ovechkin or Patrik Laine he’d be playing in the NHL this season, and not in the NCAA with Boston College.

But look at his pre-draft stats. In 88 games between the Junior US National Development Program and the u18 US National team, he scored 70 goals. Add another seven goals in seven games for the US U18 World Championship squad and he has 77 in 2017-18.

Seventy-seven goals in 95 games played! That’s a goal every 0.81 games.

Obviously, that goal-scoring rate doesn’t directly translate to the NHL. But the point here is that the Islanders haven’t had a goal-scoring machine lilke Wahlstrom in their system for a very long time. Even Anders Lee, who is now one of the five best goal scorers in the NHL over the last two years didn’t have those numbers.

Oliver Wahlstrom has so much potential. Sure, we still have no idea what he might do at the NHL level. But the ceiling for Wahlstrom is unbelievably high right now. The Islanders could very well have the makings for one the better goal scorers in the league currently in the system

That’s why the Islanders can’t entertain the notion of trading the eleventh overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.
