The New York Islanders had a heavy start to the preseason with six games in seven days. It may seem like a lot but it’s exactly what the doctor ordered.

A lot has changed for the New York Islanders this year. There’s a new man in charge, there’s a new coach, familiar faces gone, and new faces added to the squad. Normally, when you see six games in seven days that comes off as a ton.

In most cases, you’d be right. With this Islanders team, it’s exactly what they needed.

Barry Trotz and Lou Lamoriello, it’s still crazy to think those are the two guys in charge, need all the time they can get to evaluate the roster. They’re still trying to see who makes the 23 man roster and what line combinations and defensive pairings to use.

Thomas Greiss spoke about how important these games are:

"“Get the new guys more used to each other…We have a few new faces to get to know on and off the ice.”"

These preseason games are a great evaluation tool. You can only tell so much in practice, game situations help decide who is ready for the NHL.

Now, the Islanders have just two more preseason games remaining before they do it for real. A lot’s going to be decided this next week. Hockey, real hockey, is coming.
