12: PK percentage goes above 80 percent

In addition to allowing the most goals in the entire league, the New York Islanders also had the worst penalty kill percentage too. The power play was fine, it was just the penalty kill that was attrocious.

Last year the Islanders killed off 73.2 percent of the power plays they faced. That means that just over one out of every four power plays resulted in a goal.

In order to cut down on the number of goals they allow they’re going to have to also cut down on the power play goals they allow. Luckily for the Islanders, Barry Trotz is here to instill his defensive strategy.

The Caps had an 80.3 penalty kill percentage last year and the Capitals PK percentage never went under 80 percent. With the Islanders bringing in multiple penalty killers in during free agency, they should be substantially better at it this season.

80.1 was the median, for PK percentage in the NHL last year. This might be the area the Islanders improve most in just based on the direction they decided to go this past offseason.
