GLENDALE, AZ – JANUARY 22: Jordan Eberle

21: Jordan Eberle is traded at the trade deadline

Last June, the New York Islanders pulled off one of the more head-scratching trades in recent NHL history. For a change, the Islanders were on the right side of this deal thanks to old pal, Peter Chiarelli.

Garth Snow flipped a struggling Ryan Strome (former top-five pick) for Jordan Eberle straight up. Boy did it pay off. In his first year with the Islanders Eberle put up 59 points (25 goals, 34 assists) in his first year with the Isles.

Ryan Strome, on the other hand, put up only 34 points for the Oilers. It was a huge win for the Islanders but Eberle’s days in New York might be numbered.

The Islanders have Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle with expiring deals. In reality, you can likely only pick one of the two. With Josh Ho-Sang and Oliver Wahlstrom in the pipeline as right wings, they can probably afford to lose him (longterm).

By the time the deadline comes around, the Isles will likely be out of the playoff race. If they are, flipping Eberle to a contender for a big package makes a ton of sense. It’s not about the 2018 season, it’s about setting yourself up for 2019 and beyond.
