Wouldn’t Trade List

Nylander would be a great player for the New York Islanders to get. But even in a trade for a 22-year-old 61 point center like Nylander, there are deal breakers.

The Islanders roster isn’t open for the Toronto Maple Leafs to take whomever they’d like. There are a number of players that the New York Islanders just can’t/won’t move for almost anyone.

We all know Mathew Barzal’s qualities. While the start of 2018-19 hasn’t been as great as it was last year, the fact remains that he has 99 points in his first 100 games. Just a single point shy of a record that only Connor McDavid has achieved in the past decade.

Ryan Pulcok is going to be the New York Islanders top pair defenseman for years to come. He’s already playing top pair minutes and getting better by the game.

Both first-round picks from 2018 in Oliver Wahlstrom and Noah Dobson are here to stay. Wahlstrom is projected to be a top level goal scorer in the NHL once he gets here, while Dobson is slated to be that all-around defenseman that every NHL team needs in today’s game.

Devon Toews and Kieffer Bellows represent the next wave of talent that should grace the Isles roster as early as this season in the case of Devon Toews.

William Nylander is good, potentially even great. But he’s not a player that the New York Islanders should mortgage their future on. They have more than enough players on the roster and in the system to make a deal work without needing to dip into their blue-chip or NHL ready prospects.
