Johnny Boychuk is perhaps the only name that doesn’t belong on this list. Unfortunately, his current no-trade clause forces the New York Islanders hand.
Thankfully in 2019-20 Boychuk’s trade protection is downgraded to a modified no-trade clause which does not require protection. I’ll double back to why that’s a good thing. But that should already be plainly obvious.
Ryan Pulock and Nick Leddy take the two other slots on the Islanders defensive protect list.
Look at the rest of the lineup, there isn’t another player that’s worth protection today.
Thomas Hickey, Scott Mayfield, nor Adam Pelech are protection worthy. Even though Adam Pelech was protected by Garth Snow during the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft just a few years ago.
Which then gets me to double back to Johnny Boychuk and his downgraded trade protection.
By the time of the expansion draft Johnny Boychuk modified no-trade clause will not require protection. Which means his slot can be given to a player like Devon Toews.
By 2021 the left-hander should be a staple in the Islanders roster. If he’s anything like he’s shown in the AHL, Toews should be one heck of a player.
Through three seasons in the AHL Toews has 84 points in 127 games. He’s been the to AHL All-Star game and won the leagues fastest skater title that season.
Again, if he lives up to the hype Devon Toews will without a doubt require protection in the Seattle expansion draft.
