Goalies

The Islanders can only keep one goalie. You have to think if the expansion draft happens today, the New York Islanders opt to keep Thomas Greiss.

Before facing the Winnipeg Jets, Thomas Greiss has a 9-4-1 record with a 2.42 GAA and 0.926SV% this season. It’s been one heck of a resurrection considering his 3.82GAA and .892SV% from last season.

To be fair, Greiss has only been marginally better than counterpart Robin Lehner. The former Buffalo Sabres goalie sits with a 4-5-2 record and a 2.71GAA and a 0.913SV% in 2018-19.

Both have been absolutely fantastic since the start of the season. But again, the Isles can only protect one in the expansion draft.

With Lehner on an expiring deal he won’t count towards protection limits. Meaning that the Islanders have to choose from either Thomas Greiss or Christopher Gibson. The case to protect Thomas Greiss is easy to make.

Of course that’s if the expansion draft happens today. Seeing as it won’t happen until 2021 neither Greiss or Lehner will be under contract.

The Islanders might just be under the Linus Soderstrom and Ilya Sorokin tandem. Third-round pick in 2018 Jakub Skarek might not be too far by that time either.
