Devon Toews Also Please

There is no reason to have Luca Sbisa on the roster. The Isles brought him in on a PTO and subsequently signed him to a single year deal. He’s played five games this season.

And that’s fine, he isn’t very good. He doesn’t deserve playing time. But that seventh spot on the blue line should absolutely go to Adam Pelech this season. Pelech seems like a fine depth option for the Isles, but a night-in-night-out defender he isn’t. At least not this season.

So with Pelech and Sbisa both taking up roster spots, Devon Toews is sitting out in the AHL. Where he’s dominating.

For the third straight season in the AHL Devon Toews is putting up great numbers for the Sound Tigers. In 21 games Toews has 17 points. He’s on pace for 62 points this season.

Toews is fast, great at moving the puck, and generates offense. Everything the Isles desperately need from their defenders at the NHL level. And they aren’t getting it.

Just like teammate Josh Ho-Sang, it doesn’t make sense that Devon Toews is playing with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season. Considering Luca Sbisa makes $1.5 million on the cap and Devon Toews would cost just $700,000 it makes even less sense.

(Although its true that the Isles aren’t cap strapped.)

Just like Ho-Sang, it’s time we see what Devon Toews can do in the NHL. Waive Sbisa for purpose of a buyout and call Toews up now.
