New York Islanders Round Table: Quarter Season Grade

Michel Anderson | Grade: B-
I give the Isles a B-.
Sounds harsh? Think about how terrible their power play is right now. It might not be the worst in the league at the moment, but it’s pretty close with a 14.4 percent efficiency.
The Isles have gone 1-for-25 on the power play before facing the Golden Knights. The lone PPG came against the Detroit Red Wings on a 5-on-3. Keep that in mind.
The Isles (again, before puck drop against the Golden Knights) were in a playoff position. They held 14-11-4 record for 32 points.
Now consider the position that the New York Islanders could be in if the power play was average?
That’s good for at least another four to six points in the standings, easy. That puts the Islanders comfortably in second place in the Metropolitan Division and even breathing down Washington’s neck for the division lead.
The grade is so low because of just how long the power play has been ineffective.

The Islanders have been good this season. But a power play that operates at league average puts the Islanders at the top of the division.
