New York Islanders Daily: Otto Koivula Has 18 Points In Last 18 Games

New York Islanders prospect Otto Koivula is straight up dominating in the AHL with 18 points in his last 18 games with the Sound Tigers.
Otto Koivula is probably the best New York Islanders prospect that nobody ever talks about. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NHL Draft out of Finland. The Nokia native played two seasons in Liiga before coming over to the AHL this year.
In 2016-2017 he won Liiga’s rookie of the year with 30 points in 50 games, and last year he put up 27 points in 53 games as a 19-year-old. Keep in mind, Liiga is Finland’s professional league so he held his own in that league with their best players.
Now this season, he started slowly with the Sound Tigers. But in his last 18 games, he’s got 18 points. If you want to break that down even further you can have five goals in five games.
Right now, Valtteri Filppula is on IR for the Islanders leaving Leo Komarov to play third line center minutes. Komarov hasn’t played center since 2013, but he’s done a fairly good job in Filppula’s absence.
Still, the Isles should see what they have from Koivula. He’s killing the AHL game right now, what can a stint in the NHL hurt? Even if the Isles don’t call him up, I think he should be in the conversation for their third line center going into 2019-2020.
This once considered depth prospect is rising quickly. He is far and away their best center prospect.
