Robin Lehner’s been the best free agent signing from the offseason, not only for the New York Islanders but throughout the NHL. His play this past week earned him the NHL’s third star of the week.
Picked up for a single year at $1.5 million as an unrestricted free agent, the New York Islanders took a chance that Robin Lehner could be an above average NHL starter. Just like he was in 2016-17 when he started 58 games for a 2.68GAA and .920SV%.
This week the NHL recognized Robin Lehner’s play by naming him the
for January 6th, 2019.
The period the NHL was looking at was between December 31st, 2018 and January 6th, 2019. Lehner played in three games with a 3-0-0 record with a 1.99GAA and 0.935SV%.
Lehner’s play is a big factor as to why the New York Islanders are currently working on a six-game winning streak and sit in the first wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.
But Lehner’s star level of play extends beyond his three most recent games. He’s currently on a seven-game win streak. Lehner hasn’t lost a game since December 12th against the Vegas Golden Knights.
In that seven-game span, Lehner has averaged a 1.14GAA and a 0.958SV%. He’s been an absolute stud between the pipes for the Islanders.

Its led some Isles fans to start wondering if its time to sign Robin Lehner to a contract extension? As a pending free agent at the end of the season, if you could lock him up now for a reasonable raise it might be a smart move as we wait for Ilya Sorokin.
