New York Islanders Daily: Power Play Kills Isles Again

After another brutal performance on the power play, the New York Islanders came up short again in their 4-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
In what’s now become a recurring theme with the New York Islanders, their special teams let them down in a big way again last night. After falling behind 2-1, the Islanders had multiple power-play opportunities to get back in the game.
On the three man advantages for the Isles, they looked completely lost. There was no puck movement, no shots on goal, and very little time spent in the offensive zone.
Through half the season, the Islanders are now 19 for 121 on the power play for a 15.7 percent on the year. That puts them 25th in the league. Nine out of the top-10 teams in power play percentage are in a playoff spot, notice a trend here?
That’s why we were so hard on the Islanders for sending Josh Ho-Sang down because you’re really going to sit here and say he can’t help you on the power play but Cal Clutterbuck, who has two power-play points in the last two years can?
Unfortunately, the Isles penalty kill is just as mediocre. They kill at a 77.7 percent rate which puts them at 25th in the NHL. Special Teams is a major issue for this team, and likely my biggest criticism of them this year.
If the Isles seriously want to compete for a playoff spot, they have to do better in both areas.
