Cal Clutterbuck Coast to Coast-ish

Before playing the Washington Capitals in Barry Trotz return to the National capital Cal Clutterbuck had three goals to his name. While linemates Matt Martin and Casey Cizikas were on pace for career years, Cal wasn’t putting up such great numbers.

It’s not like he didn’t have the opportunity. He plays in the slot on the Islanders second power-play unit and both Cizikas and Martin who are his linemates are putting up numbers this season. But Cal would change than against Washington.

A few minutes after Josh Bailey put the Islanders up 1-0 early in the third period Cal Clutterbuck picked up the puck in the Islanders D-zone. He was already in stride when he picked it up and left Michael Kempny in his dust as he and Matt Martin broke for a 2-on-0.

Rather than pass to the not so open Martin, Clutterbuck took the shot and roofed it on Braden Holtby putting it in the toy department.

Clutterbuck showed vision, speed, and a killer shot all in a single play. And all three are qualities we haven’t seen from Cal Clutterbuck this season. Again he had three goals before game number 47.

I’d say hopefully Cal can build on that, but we know that just two days later against the Ducks Clutterbuck scored a pair. That’s three goals in two games for Cal. He’s absolutely built off of that. Which is great for the Islanders scoring depth (and maybe even their power play).
