Be afraid of pending UFA’s

Lou Lamoriello also can’t be afraid to give something up for someone just because their contract is about to expire. Artemi Panarin, Matt Duchene and Mark Stone are the three biggest names on the market and each of them are on an expiring deal.

It would be a shame if the deadline came and went and neither of those three guys were moved to the New York Islanders. Yes, trading for a guy on an expiring deal is inherently risky but it’s worth that risk.

Either of those three guys could instantly help the New York Islanders right now. Plus, you have a better chance of getting one of those guys to sign if you get them in your building playing for you than waiting on July 1.

Who was the last big free agent the Islanders landed? They had to overpay for Andrew Ladd just a few years ago to get him to come here. Show Duchene, Stone, or Panarin what it’s like playing here, win two, three, or heck even four playoff rounds, and get them to stay.

The Isles have a ton of cap space, a young team, and a great coach. Trading for a “rental” might just be the best thing that they can do, and just because there’s a chance that player doesn’t re-sign doesn’t mean you should shy away from it.
