New York Islanders Three Stars in 3-1 Loss To Washington Capitals

Cal Clutterbuck
Yeah, Cal Clutterbuck gets a star for his play tonight. Sure, he didn’t score a goal and he didn’t even get an assist on Kuhnhackl’s goal. But Cal had an impressive game.
Just looking at the box score, Cal Clutterbuck recorded six shots on net, six hits, three blocks, and a takeaway. All of that coming with the four fewest minutes (12:30) on the team.
Usually when we heap praise on the the Islanders its directed at Casey Cizikas because he’s scored a goal again. But tonight, Cal gets the nod because of his overall play.
Again, look at the box score stats and its clear that Clutterbuck was all over the ice and being a positive contributor for the team.
It’s important to acknowledge when a player has a good game, but doesn’t get on the score sheet. Because while goals decided who wins or loses, there’s more to creating a goal than the puck going into the net.
And that was Clutterbuck’s performance tonight. He did everything he needed to do to put his team in a winning position. It just didn’t actually generate anything.
