In 47 years of Islanders hockey, 26 Swedish players have suited up for the organization. This includes 19 skaters and five goalies.

Islanders Top 5 Swedes

Bob Nystrom, RW

Nystrom was drafted by the Islanders in the third round (33rd overall) in the 1972 draft. Playing his entire 14-year career with the franchise, Nystrom would play 900 games and score 513 points.

Becoming one of the most physical players in the league during his time, Nystrom’s work ethic was unmatched. Although he was a skilled fighter, Nystrom wanted to be more than just a grinder and worked to improve his skating ability and all other abilities needed to produce offensively.

Nystrom was an integral player for the Islanders 1979-80 Cup run as he scored the overtime goal that secured the organization’s first of four Stanley Cups. His jersey would eventually be retired by the Islanders on April 1st, 1995.

Tomas Jonsson, D

Being drafted by the Islanders in the second round (25th overall) in 1979, Jonsson would become one of the Islanders top playing making defenseman.

In eight seasons with the Islanders, Jonsson suited up for 532 games, produced 333 points, and sports a +/- of 76. Of these 333 points, 249 were assists. Jonsson was a part of the last two Islanders Cup teams.

Kenny Jonsson, D

Spending his last nine seasons with the Islanders, Jonsson played in 597 games and scored 232 points, 175 of which were assists. Jonsson was a top defenseman for the Islanders during the late ’90s and early 2000s. He would captain the team for two seasons, from 1999 until 2001.

Stefan Persson, D

In 1974, the Isles drafted Persson in the 14th round (214th overall). Persson spent his entire nine-year career with the organization and can now be considered an absolute steal from that draft considering his accomplishments.

In 622 games, Persson put up 317 assists and 369 points in total. Persson was a solid playmaking defenseman for the Islanders and was a part of the team for the four straight Stanley Cups. Persson finished his career with a 176 +/-.

Anders Kallur, RW

Kallur spent his entire career with the Isles. In six seasons, he would rack up 101 points and a total of 211 points in 383 games. He was a part of the team for the four straight Stanley Cups.
