Leo Komarov

The Islanders signed Leo Komarov to a four-year $12 million deal this past July. At the time it felt like an overpay for someone who is a fourth line player but when you consider that he’s playing third line minutes it makes it even worse.

Komarov has 23 points this year which is pretty close to expectations this year. Fans have appointed Komarov as this great penalty killer, which to an extent is true, he’s one of the better penalty killers but he doesn’t give you much value outside of that.

He’s not the same offensive player he once was, his shooting percentage is 15th on the team, and his faceoff percentage has taken a nosedive this year.

At 32 years old he will likely decline even more over the next three years and will have a third line role which is well above his skill set at this point. Not to mention, Komarov is one of the leading “veteran leadership penalty takers” come late in the third period.

Where Are the Islanders From?. Next

Each of these three guys are NHL caliber players it’s just that Islanders fans tend to look at them through the blue and orange lens and overrating them.
