Picks 1-5

Jack Hughes. 97. 1. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. C. USDP

Again, wild. The Colorado Avalanche move all the way up to number one in the draft and get to select center Jack Hughes. Think of that center depth of Nathan MacKinnon and Jack Hughes.

Jack Hughes is a blend of speed and skill. With 78 points in 37 games for the USDP, he’s averaging just over two points per game. Incredible. And they aren’t done!

(When we drafted this Colorado was not in a playoff position)

TPS (Liiga). 72. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. RW. Kaapo Kakko. 2

He’s only 18 years old, but he’s putting up outstanding numbers in the Finnish league playing alongside men. In 45 games he has 22 goals and 38 points.

Sure, he’s big at 6’4″ 207lbs, but again, he isn’t playing in the OHL where he’d regularly be playing against boys that rarely reach his size. He’s playing men of his size.

67. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. RW. 3. St. Petersburg. Vasili Podkolzin

The Los Angeles Kings can use any young talent they can get. After their two Stanley Cup, their core has aged rapidly. His rough and aggressive style of play are well suited for a Western Conference outfit. And his pure skill fits well on a team that desperately needs it. The Kings and Podkolzin were made for each other.

Pick Analysis. Lethbridge Hurricanes. Dylan Cozens*. Scouting Report. C. 4. 103

*The pick was originally from Ottawa and was acquired in a trade for Matt Duchene.

He’s big, strong, fast, and he can score. Yukon native Dylan Cozens has everything a player needs to excel at the NHL level. For Colorado to leave the 2019 draft with Hughes and Cozens is a major coup, and two incredible chips for a Colorado squad that just needs a few more pieces.

D. 85. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Vancouver Giants. Bowen Byren. 5

He’s a defenseman that can skate, headman the puck out of the zone and rack up a ton of points. You have to imagine that every New Jersey Devils fans are salivating over the prospect of draft Bowen Byram. And who can blame them?
