The New York Islanders are on a surprising trip to the playoffs. Who is most responsible for the improbable season?

Before the season started nearly everyone picked against the New York Islanders, including me. On one of our podcasts, I said to co-host Mitch Anderson that the Islanders would finish with 78 points.

I saw the additions of Tom Kuhnhackl, Leo Komarov, Val Filppula, with John Tavares walking out the door and saw disaster. My mistake was underestimating the power of Barry Trotz and the team game.

It took a couple of weeks into the season but the Islanders found their groove. They were winning games with good defense, timely goals, and exceptional goalie play. It was about the exact opposite formula they used the previous year under Doug Weight.

After last night, the Islanders punched their playoff ticket for the fourth time in seven years. Today we’ll take a look at the five guys who are most responsible for the New York Islanders playoff berth.
