Nikolaj Ehlers (LW) | Winnipeg Jets

"Winnipeg Jets, who have obvious cap concerns (signing Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor and Tyler Myers while likely trading RFA Jake Trouba), and offer them Puljujarvi (Laine’s buddy), your second-round pick (38th overall) and defenceman Ethan Bear for Nik Ehlers. – Jim Matheson"

This next one doesn’t involve the New York Islanders. It’s from an Edmonton writer who’s looking to give Connor McDavid that top six help he’s dying to get. Jim Matheson targets the Winnipeg Jets, Nikolaj Ehlers.

To land the 23-year-old winger and two-time 60 point player, Matheson sends a former fourth overall pick in the 2016 draft Jesse Puljujarvi, defensive prospect Ethan Bear and a second round pick to the Jets.

To make this work for the New York Islanders I’m going to follow Matheson’s lead.

According to Matheson’s source, Puljujarvi isn’t more than a third liner in the NHL. The Islanders have one of those in Michael Dal Colle. The former fifth overall pick from 2014, is at best a third liner in the NHL. He’s also outpaced Puljujarvi in terms of production. Dal Colle has scored at a pace of 0.25 points per game, while Puljujarvi has 0.20 points per game.

Bear is a right-handed defensive prospect who scored 31 points last season. That matches Mitch Vande Sompel’s return for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season. Then toss in the Islanders second-round pick (57th overall).

That’s a deal the New York Islanders should do any day and twice on Sunday.

While Ehlers only had 37 points this past season, he’s put up 64 and 60 ain the two previous seasons for the Winnipeg Jets. He shoots left but can play on the right, and is signed through the next five seasons with a $6 million cap hit.

If the Islanders can get Ehler back to that 60 points pace they’ll get that top-six winger for essentially nothing.
