Lou Lamoriello and the New York Islanders might be willing to let Robin Lehner walk if they feel that Ilya Sorokin will come to the NHL after this year.

At this time last year, the New York Islanders had a problem in net. Thomas Greiss was the only goalie under contract for the following season, so they had to go out and acquire someone in free agency or trade.

The Islanders elected to go with Robin Lehner who wasn’t offered a contract from the Buffalo Sabres. Due to a tough year both on and off the ice, Robin Lehner became available and the Isles scooped him up on a one year deal.

After an impressive season, Lehner can either extend with the Isles or hit the open market. There’s a chance the Islanders don’t extend him if they are sold on KHL prospect Ilya Sorokin coming over to the US which is a bit of a risk.

Sorokin has one more year left on his KHL deal so the Islanders are going to need a stop gap for one more year. Here are three options for the Islanders if they decide to go down that route.
