Option 2: Semyon Varlamov

Semyon Varlamov is a confusing guy. Once you think he turned it around his numbers drop off a cliff. In 2016-2017 Varlamov only played 24 games and he had a .898 save percentage and a 3.38 goals against average.

Varlamov bounced back last season with a .920 save percentage and a 2.68 goals against average. Just when you think he’s back he puts up another clunker of a season with Colorado. He had a .909 save percentage and a 2.87 goals against average.

Now, a UFA, Varlamov will likely be looking for a new home and if the Isles need a stop-gap it could be the perfect destination. On a one-year prove it deal he won’t cost all that much and if he bounces back with the Isles it will set him up for another payday.

Again, the help of Mitch Korn and Piero Greco could help tremendously in recruiting goalies who are looking to bounce back.

In the playoffs, Varlamov has been fairly okay. In 26 games he’s 13-13 with a .915 save percentage and a 2.57 goals against average. He shouldn’t come anywhere close to his old $5.9 million cap hit. Maybe a little less than half of it.
