Option 3: Mike Smith

While the other two options were in their young 30’s, Mike Smith is the grizzled vet of the bunch at 37 years old. He’s coming off a tough year with Calgary with a save percentage of .898 and a 2.72 goals against average.

Despite a poor season last year, over the course of his career he is a .912 save percentage goalie. If anyone can revive him it would be the Islanders goalie coaches and Barry Trotz.

Due to his age, he’s probably the riskiest of the bunch but he too is just a one year fix.

At the end of the day I would much rather bring back Robin Lehner because you know what he is and how good he can be at the NHL level. If Lou is convinced that Sorokin is coming and that he’s a franchise goalie I guess Cam Talbot is the one-year fix I feel the most comfortable with.

Of the three guys mentioned he has the highest ceiling of them all and has had the most success in the playoffs. I’m glad I’m not the one who has to make the call and that Lou Lamoriello is in charge.
