When the New York Islanders selected Simon Holmstrom there were some concerns with his health. He put those concerns to bed.

Hearing the name Simon Holmstrom get called in the first round from the New York Islanders came as a surprise. There were centers on the board who were mocked to the Isles, and Holmstrom had second-round pick written all over him.

Due to injuries, Holmstrom only played 21 games last year. In those 21 games, he was nearly a point per game player, putting up 20 points (7 goals, 13 assists). There’s talent there, it’s just a matter of how healthy he can be.

According to NHL.com his thumb and hip are fully healed and he has a clean bill of health heading into the 2019-2020 season. The 18-year-old will head back to Sweeden to play in the SuperElit on his U20 team.

It’ll likely be a couple of years before we see Holmstrom coming over to America to play in the AHL. He seems like a prospect that’s going to need some time to develop, but there is certainly upside in his game.

One scout said “He is trusted to be on the ice in all situations and he is just as good on the box play as he is on the powerplay”. That sounds right up Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz’s ally when it comes to hockey players.
