In our 101st New York Islanders weekly podcast, Matt and I discussed if Ryan Pulock could get Jacob Trouba money on his next contract.

So the New York Rangers signed their second big piece as part of their rebuild. Defenseman Jacob Trouba is now under contract for seven years and carries an $8 million cap hit. How does that affect the New York Islanders?

Well, Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock might look at that deal and say: “That could be me next year.” And it really could when you look at the numbers.

Sure, Pulock didn’t score 50 points yet. But before that 50 point year nor did Trouba. Before that Trouba was at best a 33 point player. On the podcast this week, Matt and I discussed if Pulock could earn that kind of money, would he get that kind of money from the Islanders, and what would he need to do to get there?

What Else Do We Talk About?

  • Top prospects: Three of the New York Islanders prospects recently made the cut of the top 50 prospects across the entire NHL. Dobson ranked the highest at number 21. Will Dobson make the team this season? What about the two other names on the list; Oliver Wahlstrom and Bode Wilde?
  • 2019 Summer Showcase: On the topic of prospects, we discuss who will be representing the Islanders at the upcoming 2019 Summer Showcase in Michigan.
  • Bottom Six Love: Why do GM’s love bottom six players so much? Why do they continue to give them ridiculously long-term deals like the one Colton Sissons got from the Nashville Predators. Is a $20 million seven-year deal worth it for a fourth liner, seriously? Not like the Isles can toss stone with Cal Clutterbuck and Leo Komarov on big money and long-term deals.
