Can New York Islanders captain Anders Lee hit 40 goals again in a Barry Trotz system? Matt and I don’t think so.

As part of our ongoing New York Islanders Summer Slam series of podcasts over on Patreon, Matt and I discussed how likely it was for Anders Lee to hit 40 goals in a Barry Trotz system.

Anders Lee is one of the better power forwards in the NHL today. Over the last three seasons, Lee has 102 goals to his name. Over that period only 12 players have more goals than Lee.

That includes a 40 goal season just two years ago. But with Barry Trotz’s defensive-focused system, can Anders Lee get back to a 40 goal return?

It’s hard to see Lee hitting such highs again. A player like Anders Lee feeds off of shots going towards the net. He can either deflect or redirect them with some incredible hand-eye coordination or he can bat in a loose puck in front of goal.

But the New York Islanders just don’t shoot the puck enough for that to happen it seems.

Through 82 games last season, the New York Islanders averaged 28.8 shots on net per game. That was good for 29th in the NHL. The Islanders are going to have to improve on that if they’re going to get the best out of Anders Lee. Or Anders Lee is going to have to find another way to get goals.
