Number 1: Mathew Barzal (Center) | Age: 22
New York Islanders Stats: 18 G, 44 A, 62 PTS
It was a bit of a sophomore slump for the “Kid who won the Calder” in 2018-2019. He went from an 85 point season to a 62 point season. Despite the regression, Barzal is by far the most important piece on this team (including people over 25).
At 22, he is a legit top-line center and the building block of this Isles team. When his team needed him most in the playoffs last year he was elite. He had seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) in eight games.
It was because he finally had a line that was working (Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle). For a big chunk of the year, Anthony Beauvillier and Josh Bailey were slumping playing with Barzal, resulting in a lack of production from Barzal.
All signs are pointing to Barzy having a bounce-back year, even in a Barry Trotz system. Like Pulock, he is due a contract after this year and it all depends on what he produces for the Isles this year.
This concludes our top 25 under 25. Let us know in the comments if you agree and who you’d move up or down on the list. One thing we can all agree on is there’s a ton of talent on this list.
