It seems that there might be some confusion on Noah Dobson’s chances at making the NHL this season. Don’t worry. He’s still got a good chance to make it.

Recently Rotowire ran an update on New York Islanders prospect Noah Dobson, indicating that Dobson was unlikely to start the season with the Islanders. They quoted Arthur Staple’s most recent work (subscription required) in the update.

That seems fairly surprising as prospects just reported to training camp the on Thursday and that the veterans have yet to report camp. They aren’t due on Long Island until the 12th of September.

So why exactly is Lou Lamoriello making these roster decisions now?

He Isn’t

It seems that perhaps Rotowire misread Arthur Staple’s piece. Staple explicitly mentions that Noah Dobson is chomping at the heels of the Islanders established veteran defenders.

Of course, he is. With two Memorial Cups in two seasons between the Acadie-Bathurst Titans and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Dobson has done everything he needs to do in order to take the next step out of the junior ranks. Unfortunately, he isn’t quite old enough to hit the AHL if he can’t make the NHL.

At one point Staple does indicate that “there’s a zero chance of that happening this time around”, but that’s direct at the prospect of Luca Sbisa getting another $1.5 million deal from the Islanders like he got in 2018-19.

Noah Dobson will get every opportunity to prove he can play at the NHL level. Just like Lou Lamoriello told the CBC back at the start of August.

Just last season Noah Dobson was one of the last cuts made by the Islanders. And that was only a few months after the Islanders drafted him 12th overall and just before he won his second Memorial Cup.
