New York Islanders Call Oliver Wahlstrom Up to NHL

On Monday, the New York Islanders called up Oliver Wahlstrom up from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Both first-round picks from 2018 are now on the team.
With a possible injury to Jordan Eberle and with Casey Cizikas being placed on injury reserve, the New York Islanders called up Oliver Wahlstrom up from the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
The eleventh overall pick in 2018 has only played four games this season in the AHL but has already looked impressive. In those four games, Wahlstrom has three points (one goal and two assists).
Factor in the five games he played with the Sound Tigers at the end of the 2018-19 season, Wahlstrom has six points in nine AHL games. That was enough for the New York Islanders to bring him up to the big league in their search for more offense.
Needing Offense
Through the first week of the Islanders 2019-20 season, they’ve tried Michael Dal Colle, Tom Kuhnhackl, and Cal Clutterbuck in their top six. Neither of them provided the offense the Islanders were looking for.
Now Oliver Wahlstrom gets a chance to prove he can be that offensive piece they’re looking for.
In three preseason games, Wahlstrom put up one assist, 13 shots on goal, four hits, and two takeaways. It was a strong performance from Wahlstrom who had a less than convincing season with Boston College in 2018-19.
That strong preseason performance led New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello to say that while Wahlstrom was going to the AHL for the season, he was close to making the NHL.
Now Wahlstrom finds himself in the same position that Devon Toews was in last season. He’s here to cover for injuries, but if he can prove he belongs there’s no reason for the New York Islanders to send him back to the AHL.

We wait and see if Oliver Wahlstrom will wait to make his NHL debut, or if he’ll suit up on Monday afternoon against the defending Stanley Cup Champion St Louis Blues.
