Through seven games, Mathew Barzal has 18 shots and three goals. His more shots mindset has been working for the New York Islanders.

Last night, the New York Islanders won their third game in a row and it was on the back of their star, Mathew Barzal. With two second period goals, he tied the game and gave the Islanders a lead that they wouldn’t surrender as they went on to win 3-1.

Barzal isn’t a big time goal scorer, that we know after two full years in the league. He had 22 in his first season and 18 last year. While his goal total dropped by a few goals last year, he shot the puck slightly more with 179 shots vs 170 in his first year.

Now, with a more shooters mindset, he is on pace for 211 shots on net for a full season. That’s a big increase from where we’ve seen him over the course of his young NHL career.

Eclipsing 200 shots has to be the goal for Mat Barzal. If he’s putting himself in that range he will be scoring 25-30 goals instead of the 20-25 we’ve grown to expect out of him.

In his rookie year it took him 12 games to score three goals, and last year 21 games. He’s on pace for 35 right now after scoring three in seven games. While 35 seems a bit extreme, a goal total in the high 20’s could be all the Islanders need out of Barzal.
