After a slow start and an 11 game stretch with no goals, Anders Lee has been on fire for the New York Islanders over the last seven.

Anders Lee has one of his best gams of the season last night with a Gordie Howe hat trick (a goal, an assist, and a fight). His impact was felt on the ice for the New York Islanders in more ways than one.

So even before we get to the goal or the fight, he played a vital role on the first power play goal. Devon Toews ripped a shot from the blue line that was able to find the back of the net. Lee was right in front screening Sergei Bobrovsky who wasn’t able to pick up the puck.

Obviously, for $7 million a year, you have to do more than screen but that’s what makes Lee so effective. He’s impossible to clear out from the crease and he is one of the best at deflecting pucks in the net.

Later in the period, Lee dropped the gloves with Brian Boyle after a late hit to Adam Pelech. That’s captain stuff. He stood up for his teammate, and policed it himself. The players appreciate that in the room, and there’s no denying Lee held his own against a much bigger Boyle.

After missing 17 minutes due to fighting, instigating, and game misconduct Lee came back and would add an empty-net goal. Now, he has eight points in the last seven games (4 goals, 4 assists).

Don’t look now but the captain’s hot, and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for the Isles.
