Prospects (and players in the system) in Action Today

  • Ruslan Iskhkov (TPS)
  • Matias Rajaniemi (Pelicans)
  • Henrik Tikannen (KalPa)*
  • Robin Salo (Orebro)

A lot of back-to-backs today in Finland. KalPa and the Pelicans play after having games yesterday. Unfortunately, there won’t be a meeting for Isles 2020 draft picks. At least not likely.

While sixth-rounder Matias Rajaniemi will play for Pelicans. His side is trying to fix a recent slide that has seen them drop to eighth in the Liiga standings, but in their way is one of the better defensive teams in the league.

With a start yesterday, Henrik Tikkanen will be serving as backup for KalPa today. Both sides (KalPa and the Pelicans) are neck-and-neck in the standings with 78 points. Whoever wins opens up a three-point cushion on the other.

With another point yesterday (a short-handed goal), Iskhakov is steadily climbing up the Liiga scoring standings. He’s nowhere near the top, but as the 35th ranked player in scoring in Finland’s top league he’s still much higher up than he was just a month ago.

Salo and Orebro get set for the first leg of a back-to-back against Oskarshamn. With two wins against the 12th ranked Oskarshamn (of 14 teams), Orebro could break into the top three of the SHL. If they do, Salo will play a big part of that.
