Adam Pelech Extension

The Isles had a few key RFA’s going into the offseason. The main one was defenseman Adam Pelech. He doesn’t have the production to merit a massive payday, but he was due a big upgrade on his expiring deal that carried a $1.6 million cap hit.

How much Lou was going to pay him was going to be important. And then Lou pulled out a gem of a contract with a $5.75 million AAV for eight years.

That’s less than a number of left-handed defensemen who are, putting it lightly, not elite. Adam Pelech isn’t elite in terms of his production, but his ability to shut down anyone on the ice is second to none. There is no better shutdown defenseman in the NHL than Adam Pelech.

And Lou Lamoriello got him for only $250,000 more than Nick Leddy was being paid last year.

Pelech is without question the best at his position in the NHL and the Islanders have him for very little and for eight years to boot. They bought seven years of UFA stats from a premier defenseman (sure of the shutdown variety) and didn’t have to break the bank to do so.

That’s a marvelous piece of business for Lou Lamoriello and the Islanders. They’ll keep one of the best shutdown defensemen on the team and the league until he’s nearly 35 years old and the deal might never really look bad.
