After starting with low expectations from the outside media, the New York Islanders are now climbing up everyone’s power rankings.

Death, taxes, and people sleeping on the Islanders. For the second year in a row, the Isles were major regression candidates heading into the season. After a 1-3 start, the advanced metrics folks began to beat their chest as a sign of victory.

Well, they have quickly retreated as the Islanders have now won seven games in a row, improving to 8-3 to start the season. The Isles are in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a game in hand on Carolina who is ahead of them.

This week, they are moving up the power rankings on everyone’s board. CBS Sports has them from 17th all the way up to 10. Sports Illustrated has them ninth, moving up from the 18th spot in their previous ranking.

NBC Sports was the biggest jump, as they moved up to fifth on that last. Finally, the outside world is beginning to see what we see on a nightly basis, it’s Barry Trotz. From NBC Sports:

"This season was going to be a big test to see how much of last year’s turnaround was Barry Trotz and how much of it was the two goalies. Even with a different goalie in place they just keep right on winning. Seven in a row entering Monday."

Barry Trotz has his team in prime position for overachieving again. This turnaround is all on him as he continues to get it done with a makeshift lineup every night.
