Forgotten TV episode of NY Islanders legend Mike Bossy and Michael Jordan discovered
It was Mike vs Mike on the golf course during an episode of Greatest Sports Legends
You wanna be like Mike, but which one? That was a reasonable question for those watching an unearthed television episode of Greatest Sports Legends in the late 1980s, which featured Michael Jordan and New York Islanders' Hall-of-Famer Mike Bossy.
The show was part of a long-running (1974-1993) sports anthology series spotlighting the lives and careers of some of the greatest names in sports. The show featured athlete hosts spending time with other athletes, talking about the defining moments of their careers and the mindset that led them to individual and team success.
In the late 1980s, Jordan had yet to win an NBA Championship but was well on his way to becoming a sports legend, while Bossy had already earned the legend label after 10 illustrious seasons and four Stanley Cups with the Islanders. This earned him recognition as the purest goal-scorer of his generation, induction into the Hall-of-Fame, and his No. 22 retired by the franchise.
In the episode, Jordan and Bossy play a round of golf and have lunch together. Their conversation, reflecting on Bossy's career, is interwoven with highlights from his career, as narrated by the great John Facenda of NFL Films and choreographed, awkward acting moments before and after swings.
In retrospect, it's fun to watch Bossy, who was part of an NHL dynasty, talk winning with Jordan, who had yet to win the first of his six championships, including two three-peats. It's a nostalgic and entertaining watch for Islanders fans and was posted by IslandersPride on YouTube, which is a must-subscribe for Islanders fans who want to watch and replay the team's history through thousands of posted videos, including game highlights and features like this one.
One of the better moments is when Jordan talks to Bossy about how he moves without the ball in basketball and asks Bossy how he does the same to score goals in the NHL. "I try to make myself invisible," Bosst explained to the young Jordan. "I know it's impossible, but if I skate in front of or stay beside one of the defensemen and then slip away and try to get behind him and get into the open, that has been a very successful part of my play."
The episode closes out with Jordan asking Bossy what he'll miss about hockey when he retires. "I'll probably miss just going out and having fun," says Bossy. "I'll miss the guys I played with a lot."
You can watch the entire season, hosted by Jordan and featuring George Gervin, Don Maynard, Roger Staubach, and others, on AppleTV.
