NY Islanders all-star Mat Barzal is poised for the best season of his career
Mat barzal could be in for a breakout season
After a stellar rookie season that saw him awarded the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year, NY Islanders all-star Mat Barzal found it difficult to reach that level again.
Barzal's rookie campaign came during John Tavares's final year with the organization, seeing Barzal lining up as the team's second-line center for the only season of his career. That season was the only one played under Doug Weight, which saw little structure. The Islanders scored at will but the defense found it difficult to keep the puck out of their own net.
Finishing with 85 points in his first season, Barzal reached the 80-point mark for the first time since 2023-24. But heading into this season, Barzal may be poised to best his career high.
Mat Barzal should be in for a massive season
Playing under Patrick Roy, the entire team realizes they'll be held accountable on the defensive end, including Barzal. But in the 36 games played by Barzal under Roy last season, he maintained his scoring pace, totaling 11 goals and 23 assists after the coaching change.
One of Barzal's biggest knocks throughout his career has been his unwillingness to shoot the puck. Under Roy, that sentiment appeared to change, putting the third most shots on goal with 109, trailing only Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri.
The most notable change for Barzal this season will be his linemates. He and Horvat seemed to have instant chemistry, and now add in Anthony Duclair and it's by far the most talented linemates Barzal has played with in his career.
Barzal has the skillset to be considered one of the leagues top players, but this season, he may have the production to prove it.
