Will the NY Islanders wear the fisherman jersey this season?

On Saturday, the New York Islanders released the dates for when they will wear their alternate jersey, the same one that has been in the rotation since the 2018-19 season. There are ten home dates where they will wear their conventional thirds, compared to eight last season.

Last December, the Islanders debuted their second Adidas Reverse Retro jersey, which featured a reimagined and revamped version of their infamous fisherman logo. While the fisherman logo will forever be polarizing, the dark navy sweater was popular with the fanbase, especially the younger generation, and was featured prominently at the Isles Lab team store throughout the season.

But it's now a new season, and we're wondering whether the newest version of the fisherman jersey was a one-and-done. It seems that way. The decision not to wear the Fisherman jerseys, which the team donned six times at UBS Arena, may not be that of the organization's but rather the overall direction of the league.

Although the league announced a new long-term contract with Fanatics last March, that decision had little impact on the future status of Reverse Retro designs. In a March interview with ESPN, NHL executive VP of marketing Brian Jennings said that the Reverse Retros were part of a "limited drops or a scarcity model" and that they never intended to run the program more than twice.

"Maybe in the future, we go back into the vault and reexamine them," Jennings added.

That doesn't mean you still won't be able to buy it. Although Fanatics will be producing the game jerseys, doesn't change the fact that the NHL owns the design that Adidas created.

Nevertheless, Islanders fans will get to their new threads fix this season when the Stadium Series jersey concept is released for their game against the New York Rangers at Metlife Stadium in February. But for those of you who love the Fisherman, it appears you'll have to wait for yet another return, but perhaps not 25 years this time around.
