Jumping on The Bandwagon-Celeb Face of the Islanders Part 2

facebooktwitterreddit

Long Island, N.Y.– When last we left the discussion on who should be the celebrity face of the Islanders, there were a number of amazing responses. We thank you for that. That’s the best thing about being an Islanders fan. We have a great bunch of fans who are always willing to voice their opinions. The last poll we did included a few famous Long Islanders:

  • Alec Baldwin
  • Jerry Seinfeld
  • LL Cool J
  • Christie Brinkley

Before we get to the results, and the new choices, I think we should take a look at a few more instances of Isles logos showing up in pop culture in the recent past:

We have this one from the TV series “Life”. Donal Logue played a Police Captain in the LAPD and he had a framed Isles jersey in his office.

Then we had this gem from the short-lived series “The Return of Jezebel James” on FOX. Parker Posey wore a Brendan Witt jersey on an episode:

In the last post we discussed Liz Lemon’s (Tina Fey) ex-boyfriend Dennis Duffy (Dean Winters) being an Islanders fan and wearing an Islanders jersey. Well, turns out Paul Giamatti played a character that was an Isles fan as well. Check out this “30 Rock” clip courtesy of NBC via YouTube. The quality isn’t great, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. Check out his dig at Matt Moulson:

I fully expect to see more Islanders logo showing up in  more TV shows and movies as the team continues to improve and become more relevant.

As for the voice of the fans, an overwhelming amount of people have chosen Jerry Seinfeld as the new face of the Islanders. 46% of people want to see ol’ Jerome as our big celebrity face. It may be a tough sell since he is pretty attached to the Mets only and can be a tad standoffish according to reports.

Next up was “someone else”, followed by LL Cool J. Ladies may love cool James, but Isles fans could obviously care less.

I do have to say we got a lot of interesting responses to the original post when I put it on Facebook. I heard the following people:

  • Billy Crystal
  • Howard Stern
  • Flavor Flav
  • Steve Guttenberg
  • Tony Danza
  • Boomer Esiason (His daughter Sydney is dating Matt Martin, but he’s a New York Rangers season ticket holder)

I heard a couple of other names that are the most interesting of all, and I will discuss them in more detail below.

As I stated previously, I am looking for someone in the public eye. Someone recognizable who is still pretty relevant. I have received all these great answers, but also a few laughable suggestions along the way as well, including Lindsay Lohan. Listen, we have enough problems here, we don’t need any of hers, and hers are numerous. Unless of course she wants to pony up the money to buy the team, break the Brooklyn lease, and keep the Isles in Nassau. Then, I say welcome aboard Queen Lohan!

Any of the previous choices though would certainly be interesting, except for maybe Steve Guttenberg. Sorry Steve, your 15 minutes are up.

Steve, doesn’t look very happy about it, but what can you do?

So, we are left with two finalists to be added to the poll:

Dee Snider-From Baldwin. Dee Snider IS the 1980’s. He was anti-establishment, he had long hair, he wore make-up. Plainly put, Dee was fed up with the man. He was “not gonna take it, anymore”. Nowadays, Dee has kinda calmed down a tad. He is still a rocker, but he is now more of a domesticated, toned down rocker.

He would be the perfect celebrity to represent Isles Nation. He is still universally recognized and has never really left the spotlight. He has recently appeared on “Celebrity Apprentice” which brought him back into the public eyes. Even dealing with Donald Trump has not stopped him from maintaining his fiery personality.  Snider would certainly be a different type of celebrity face. He would appeal to the rougher side of  the sport. While the previous celebrities would probably be more concerned with the popular scorers like John Tavares and Matt Moulson, Snider is more apt to go with the rougher side of the sport. I could totally see him appearing in promos with Matt Carkner and Eric Boulton.

Dee Snider still lives on the Island. He lives in East Setauket with his wife and 4 kids. Why not make it a family affair? Dee is 58. Still plenty of time for him to enjoy games on the Island and Brooklyn before he has to put away the eye shadow for the last time.

Billy Joel-From Hicksville  We all know Billy Joel’s story.  He was a kid from the streets of Hicksville, who was a self described “dirtbag”. He grew up in the 60’s, and pretty much lived that 60’s rebel lifestyle. He never graduated High School, skipping it a lot of the time, and even took up boxing for a time. But, obviously there was something better out there for him. He is one of the biggest Rock & Roll stars of all time. Joel is the third best selling artist of all time, and has sold 150M records.

He will always be culturally relevant. Yes, he is not exactly in the spotlight now, but he’s Billy Joel. He’s recognized worldwide. I know he has had his share of issues. 3 wives, car accidents, drinking, rehab. But, that seems to be in the past. It would be awesome to have Billy as the face of the Isles. How about writing a song for the team?  I wouldn’t really consider it a goal song, as much as a theme song. Ironically, our goal song was recorded by Joe Satriani, another Long Island native. The Miami Dolphins have a theme song, why not the New York Islanders?

I think Billy would be an amazing representative for the team, but he is on tour a lot and although he does come back to Long Island a lot, he does not really live here full time. Perhaps we can get his daughter Alexa Ray instead? She’s not Billy, but she’s close. Maybe devotion to the Islanders could bring Billy and Christie Brinkley back together. Hockey love makes the world go ’round.

So, again I ask, who should be the celebrity face of the New York Islanders? Will Jerry Seinfeld still take the prize or do Dee Snyder and Billy Joel have a chance at the crown? Vote and let’s find out!:
