The New York Islanders take to the ice for game number 82 against the Ottawa Senators in a meaningless game. But a few players still have milestones they could hit.

It’s was a disappointing end to the 2016-17 season for the New York Islanders. Winning five straight before heading home to face the Senators wasn’t enough as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Penguins, end the season at game 81.

The Islanders start to the season is something to forget, while the second half was a complete revelation. Going from the bottom of the East to battling for a spot up to the bitter end.

Tonight’s game won’t mean anything in terms of the standings for either team. Ottawa locked up home ice advantage already against those Maple Leafs.

But a few Isles players still have a few milestones they could hit tonight. Giving them a little something to play for.

New York Islanders

Jason Chimera – 20 Goals

When Chimera was signed in free agency what he had done while playing with Washington. He was third to fourth line player putting up 40 points. But at 37 years old it was tough to imagine him repeating that on an Islanders team with less offensive firepower than the Capitals.

He didn’t hit 40 points and certainly won’t after tonight. But with 19 goals and 32 points and another game to go, he’s been worth every penny of that $2.25 million two-year deal.

Another goal would round it up to 20. A number he’s only hit twice in his entire 15 year NHL career. He’s already justified the acquisition, 20 goals is just icing on the cake.

Brock Nelson – 20 Goals

Love him or hate him, Brock Nelson is one shy of 20 goals. He may not be visible every game, but Nelson’s a guarantee for 20 goals throughout the year.

That goal would also make this Nelson’s best year in terms of production with 43 points. Yeah. This could be Nelson’s best year.

Thomas Hickey – 22 points

The Islanders reverse version of Brent Burns, Thomas Hickey is sitting at 20 points with a single game to play. That’s two shy of his career best of 22 points.

The Isles new forward with an assist here or there, or a nice OT goal could put him back on course.

Yeah, the game means nothing, but players still play for pride. Or at the very least for the sheer fun of the game. So why not go out and try to pad those stats a bit.
