New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield seems to be getting better every day and now sits as one of the better producers at even strength in the NHL.

With two assists on the return of the New York Islanders to the Nassau Coliseum, Scott Mayfield now has ten helpers on the season. Those ten assists match a season-best he set just last season. With his three goals, Mayfield is already in uncharted territory personally with 13 points in 2018-19.

His best single-season NHL production was last season with 12 points in 47 games. Through 27 games Mayfield now sits with 13 points. That’s 108 percent of the production in just under half the time (49 percent).

What’s more impressive is that Scott Mayfield is one of the better producers in the league at even strength from the blueline.

Top Ten Defensive Production

Scott Mayfield is in the top ten in terms of helpers for blueliners in the entire NHL. Arguably he’s ninth, but Montreal’s Jeff Petry takes the spot for some reason in the NHL’s ranking.

The 26-year-old put up another two points in the Islanders return to Nassau Coliseum. First getting a secondary assist on Anders Lee‘s opening goal, then getting another secondary assist on Anthony Beauvillier‘s goal a few minutes later.

Mayfield is quickly showing his quality on the Islanders blue line with his ability to get involved offensively. In terms of generating offense, he ranks fourth in terms of the Islanders blue line in expected goals* for.

While the focus here is on the offense, his defense duties can’t be neglected. Mayfield hasn’t always been the most solid defender on the team. Most recently his ability to pressure opposing forwards has drawn a lot of scorn.

But Mayfield currently ranks fifth in terms of expected goals against* for all Islanders blueliners with a 14.21. By no means is that the greatest score in the league. But it ranks as the 41st best score in the league. Better than players like Aaron Ekblad, Ryan McDonagh, and Kris Letang.

And Scott Mayfield is locked in for another for another five years with a $1.45 million cap hit. In terms of value, Mayfield is proving to be an absolute steal.

I said it a few weeks ago, Scott Mayfield has everything to be a great top four defender for the New York Islanders. So far he’s proving that claim true. Hopefully, that continues for him and for the Islanders salary cap.
